What Type Of Follow Up Care Is Required After Being Diagnosed With Skin Cancer

Once a patient has been diagnosed and treated for non-melanoma skin cancer (Basal cell and Squamous cell skin cancers), it is generally recommended that a full-body skin cancer screening examination be performed by a board-certified dermatologist every 6 months for 2 years, then once yearly thereafter. For melanoma, it really depends on the melanoma type. For the earliest stage melanoma (called melanoma in-situ), every 6 month for 3 years, then yearly thereafter. For invasive melanoma, a full body skin cancer screening examination is recommended every 4 months for 3 years, every 6 months for 2 years, and then yearly thereafter. For melanoma patients with a large number of atypical moles called dysplastic nevi , I still recommend twice yearly skin screenings using total body digital imaging for mole mapping.
